Yup. The preshow producer advised them to, at least in Hudson's and Hill's cases. They want perfection, and the smallest glitch can throw off the whole performance. I know Whitney lip synced too but I'm not sure why, I'm assuming for the same reasons.

Not possible. At least not for Carrie's National Anthem performance tonight. Listen to it again if you can. She was out of tune a couple times, including her last note that was crazy flat. Get a little musical training and you'll be able to tell if someone is singing live. Edit - Just watched Whitney. After wiping away the tears, I can also say; that was not lip synced either.
